- List of bugs and suggestions for Microsoft Word 3.0 sent to Microsoft.
-
-
- First of all I want to state that WORD 3.0 is definitely worth the money I paid
- for it, but there are some bugs, and there are some things I would like to see
- in future versions.
-
- 1) WORD does crash or hang occasionally; from the reports I have seen, on
- various boards, there may be a memory management bug.
-
- 2) WORD does not accept '"' (double quote) for inches as WORD 1.x did.
-
- 3) WORD does not offer "line" spacing in paragraphs, as WORD 1 did. Noting
- this in the documentation might be a sufficient answer. If you specify "li",
- word immediately converts it to points.
-
- 4) With ImageWriter 2.5 WORD does not support draft mode.
-
- 5) If you specify multiple copies, WORD sends each page to the LaserWriter
- once per copy. This can be very time consuming, especially if the page has
- extensive fonts changes and/or graphics. I suggest that the print back to
- front option be changed to something like "print collated", and if it is not
- selected all copies of each page should be printed together to save LaserWriter
- compute time.
-
- 6) The current method of setting preferences is very awkward for the "show
- hidden text" option, which may need to be toggled several times in a short
- interval. I suggest making it an item in the Edit or Format menu and/or
- providing a command key option to toggle it.
-
- 7) WORD does not support enough FONTs. I complained bitterly about the 32
- FONT limit in the previous version, and you actually REDUCED that by 2.
- MacWrite, MacPaint, PageMaker 1.2 and many other programs that use FONTs,
- easily accept over twice that number. Also, I would like to see the FONTs
- alphabetized. Why not simply a FONT menu like MacWrite's, which is very very
- easy to generate with a few toolbox calls. If you want to put sizes at the
- top, fine. All you have to do is to NOT have a dividing line to avoid problems
- with over 32 items in a menu.
-
- 8) The spelling checker does not flag "supercede" (proper spelling is
- "supersede". I am aware that because this seems to be the most commonly seen
- misspelling in print a few dictoraries have reluctantly accepted "supercede" as
- an alternative to "supersede", but "supercede" has not superseded "supersede".
- I feel that the computer software industry should purge such non-words from
- computerized spelling dictionaries.
-
- 9) WORD should support more date formats, both dynamic and non-dynamic is its
- documents. I would like to have some way to produce any of the following forms
- for todays date:
- 3/6/87 - the way you do it now
- 03/06/87 - all parts as 2 digits
- 6/3/87 - month first
- March 6, 1987
- Mar. 6, 1987
- 6, March 1987
- Friday March 6, 1987
- etc.
-
- 10) I would like to see some provision for prefixed page numbers for documents
- organized by chapters. The intent is that the chapter number prefix should
- appear in the table of contents and the index.
-
- 11) Formulas are often mis-centered vertically.
-
- 12) I would like to see kerning pairs supported for Laser FONTs.
-
- 13) I would like to see margins adjustable section by section, as is done in
- the IBM version.
-
- 14) In the dialog box for the print command, there should be an option to go
- to the print driver's dialog box immediately before printing.
-
- 15) If you create a table of contents from the header paragraphs, hidden text
- in the headers shows up in the contents. I feel that this is incorrect. Of
- course hidden text should be used when you specify that the toc should be
- generated from the .c. paragraphs. This shows up when fooling around with the
- example files.
-
- 16) Opening a glossary from the Work menu crashes the System with ID=2. Word
- permits putting a glossary onto the Work menu, but not a dictionary. Opening a
- glossary from the Finder works properly, but dictionaries opened from the
- Finder seem to be ignored.
-
- 17) There seem to be numerous bugs in the spelling dictionary in addition to
- the inclusion of "supercede" mentioned previously. "Header" is included, but
- the more common word "footer" is not. Many verbs beginning with "re" (such as
- renumber) as not included. Also there appears to be a total lack of policy
- with regard to certain words, that normally do not appear in print. Of 6
- 4-letter words tried, 4 were accepted, 2 rejected by the spelling checker.
-
- --- Note since this list was prepared, and sent to Microsoft, Jeff Angus of
- the Seattle Bureau of Info World magazine has offerred to act as an interface
- with regard to crashes/System errors while editing with Word 3.0. Call him at
- 1-206-633-5105 if you can supply any details of such crashes. One error that
- may cause crashes is trying to display an incorrect formula.
